This special and limited edition release is a special treasure for fans of Kikagaku Moyo and Ryley Walker. To commemorate the occasion, recordings made at OZ were released as OZ DAYS LIVE, a private press 2LP set featuring Miyako Ochi, Acid Seven, Masato Minami, Taj Mahal Travellers, and four tracks by the Rallizes-which constituted just a fraction of what had been recorded at the time. The sound is unlike anything either band has produced on their own. Led by the enigmatic Takashi Mizutani, the now-legendary band was one of the earliest bookings for the venue, and would ultimately close out OZ Last Days, a raucous five-day blowout to celebrate the short but wonderful world of OZ. Hadaka No Rallizes, aka Les Rallizes Dénudés, the psychedelic noisemakers originally from Kyoto, was one of the marquee names at OZ. Between June 1972 to September 1973, the cafe and performance space became the nerve center for the city’s burgeoning underground and counterculture set. The singer-songwriter and guitarist Ryley Walker, originally from Chicago but relocated to New York, recorded albums in a jazz-folk style reminiscent of Bert Jansch. On “Rang Dizzy”, Walker’s quick fingers create bubbling cascades of guitar, and he uses a background of swelling strings to add shape and drama. ![]() If “Rang Dizzy” is any indication, Course in Fable finds Walker returning to accessible - though hardly simple - songwriting. Over the last three years he’s been busy, bordering on prolific, but the music hasn’t always accommodated itself to popular tastes. Some later sessions also took place at USA Studios and in LeRoy’s kitchen. It was largely recorded at the Minbal (now JAMDEK) Studios in Chicago. He followed that with The Lillywhite Sessions, a not-especially-faithful cover of a lost Dave Matthews Band record, the jazzy Charles Rumback collaboration Little Common Twist, and, last week, the jam-heavy live set Deep Fried Grandeur performed with Kikagaku Moyo.
